US Information Industry Sheds 23,000 Jobs in August: Crypto Briefing Data Signals Tech Layoff Wave Impacting Blockchain Talent and DeFi Development

Follow the gas, not the hype. Over the past 12 months the American information industry has shed a total of 48,000 positions according to seasonally adjusted CES figures reported via Crypto Briefing. In a single month those numbers compressed to exactly 23,000 losses for August alone. That figure represents the largest single month decline since 2015 when the sector bottomed out following the last major tech recession cycle. DeFi efficiency is math, not marketing. While headlines focused on the headline 23,000 number the underlying driver is not the computer software publishing component but the traditional telecom, broadcasting and data processing subsectors that together account for 67 percent of the NAICS 51 employment base. This divergence matters enormously for blockchain because smart contract auditors, node operators and Layer-2 protocol engineers draw directly from the same talent pool now shrinking at an annualized rate of 0.92 percent.
